"AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME": JOYCE YANG PLAYS CHAMBER MUSIC WITH SHERYL STAPLES AND CARTER BREY

Joyce Yang loves playing chamber music, and she was in good company last month for the opening of the 30th season of the Chamber Music International series in Dallas. An audience favorite in that Texas town since snaring the silver medal at the 2005 Cliburn competition, Joyce played a trio of piano trios with violinist Sheryl Staples and cellist Carter Brey, associate concertmaster and principal cello of the New York Philharmonic, respectively. Dallas Morning News critic Scott Cantrell raved: “Every so often there’s a performance that makes you hear a thrice-familiar work in new and wonderful ways. That’s how it was for me Sunday afternoon with the Brahms B major Piano Trio, a work I’ve adored for more years than I should admit. … I don’t know how much the three of them have been playing together, but the unanimity of ensemble and expression, and the sheer finesse, was that of a threesome that had been performing together for years. … This was one of the best ensembles I’ve heard in the 15 CMI seasons I’ve sampled. I hope they’re immediately booked for a return visit.”

Joyce’s next date with Staples and Brey is in New York City – with their big band: her return to the New York Philharmonic in the spring as soloist in Falla’s “Nights in the Gardens of Spain.” Learn more.
