Joyce Yang loves playing chamber music, and she was in good company last month for the opening of the 30th season of the Chamber Music International series in Dallas. An audience favorite in that Texas town since snaring the silver medal at the 2005 Cliburn competition, Joyce played a trio of piano trios with violinist Sheryl Staples and cellist Carter Brey, associate concertmaster and principal cello of the New York Philharmonic, respectively. Dallas Morning News critic Scott Cantrell raved: “Every so often there’s a performance that makes you hear a thrice-familiar work in new and wonderful ways."
After a whirlwind summer of performances at eight music festivals - including Aspen, Bravo! Vail, and Ravinia - Joyce embarks on a steady stream of orchestral debuts, returns, and chamber music collaborations. She reunites with the New York Philharmonic under Bramwell Tovey for five concerts of Falla’s “Nights in the Gardens of Spain”; makes her New Jersey Symphony debut with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in the orchestra’s season finale and conductor Jacques Lacombe’s last concert as Music Director; performs and records the world premiere of Michael Torke’s Piano Concerto, created expressly for her and commissioned by the Albany Symphony; and returns to the Melbourne Symphony in Australia to play Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
This summer, Joyce Yang – a pianist BBC magazine praises for her “bold and modern” sound – performs in eight festivals across the U.S., and she reunites with favored partner Augustin Hadelich for several violin-piano recitals and their first duo recording session. This month’s recording session, to be held at the State University of New York in Purchase for a future Avie release, will see them tackle works that they have showcased on tour worldwide: two Romantic-era masterpieces, Schumann’s Violin Sonata No.

On March 19, Joyce Yang – “one of the great chamber players of her generation” (Theater Jones) – joins the Takács Quartet for Dvorák’s A-major Piano Quintet in the Great Performers Series at Lincoln Center.
Following her performance this past weekend at Musica Viva Australia’s Huntington Estate Music Festival, Joyce will perform a solo recital that includes Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No. 2 (Nov 27); a program of Albéniz and Ginastera (Nov 29-am); Hindemith’s Theme and Variations (“The Four Temperaments”) with the Australian National Academy of Music Chamber Orchestra (Nov 29-pm); and Taneyev’s Piano Quintet in G minor (Nov 30).
